01:26 pm - floorz
Floor man says the wood layer on my existing floor is too thin to be sanded, so it gots to go! It's just as well because yesterday I finally noticed an (unopened!) bottle of bleach I had left on the floor tipped over and has been leaking, so there's a whole new exciting spot to the side.

Only problem is my existing floor is glued down, and that's going to be a giant asspain to take out, but unlike with refinishing, at least I can still live in the house (just have to stash the cats in my bedroom on days they're doing stuff).

I'm probably going to go with engineered wood again. I considered laminate pretty seriously but I just don't like the feel of it underfoot. So yeah, the compromise is if the dishwasher does leak and destroys the new floor, then I'll get laminate.

Now to...hurry up and wait while I send this in for HOA approval. Yay.

10:43 am - sheesh
I don't know why the act of doing anything to the house has to be so extremely asspainriffic. I have three companies giving me three different opinions on what to do to the kitchen floors, and the last one just said I might be able to sand the existing engineered hardwood down, which someone else a year ago told me wasn't possible.

Nevermind the fun of the HOA's new sound transmission rules by which I have to provide two very specific sound transmission ratings for whatever I might want to put in, which two stores are telling me are not actually measured or provided by flooring manufacturers.

Then I have to find someone to do the floors and worry about whether what I pick will be too high to go under the dishwasher and make sure whoever does this is qualified to take out the appliances (and some of them won't do it) and blah blah blah.

AWESOME

I'm having someone over to the house tomorrow to give me an opinion of what I can do to what I have, or whether I just need to replace the stuff entirely. At least the bathrooms should be less of a pain. I think. Ugh.

09:50 pm - gooooooood kitty
One of the things I've picked up from watching Obsessed on A&E is the idea of exposure therapy: take the thing that upsets the OCD patient, expose them to it, then help them to manage their anxiety during the upsetting time instead of letting them do the compulsive behavior that's interfering with their life and relationships.

So I am applying this technique to my girl fraidycat. When she is sitting somewhere that I can get at her, I quietly walk up to her (i.e. the upsetting thing), and then pet and skritch the hell out of her (which makes her purr like mad and turn upside down for tummy rubs and almost fall off the bed or chair) instead of letting her run for it (the compulsive response). It seems to be going well -- after a few days of doing this, today she let me come up to her on the bed without running away from me, and she just came up voluntarily to the couch to ask for more pets and skritches instead of keeping her distance all night. Good girl!

In unrelated news, I am ramping up to do more stuff to the house -- this time it'll be new kitchen floors and entryway, new tile on the bathroom floors (minimal non-white grout), and a new stove and microwave. I am very strongly leaning towards an induction range as there's no option for gas lines in this place, everyone hates smoothtop electrics, and I just figured out my breaker seems to support 50 amp which is more than enough. I would need to get some more induction-capable pans, but then again, I'd get to get some more induction-capable pans. Woo, toys!

11:21 pm - Tahoe!
Just got back from our few days in Lake Tahoe to celebrate our first (dating) anniversary. Woo!

In brief:

Tour of the Jelly Belly factory
Disappointing lunch at Drooling Dog BBQ
Sunnyside Resort
A highly irritating few hours of no Internets at Sunnyside Resort just when we wanted to research dinner
Disappointing dinner at Spindleshanks in Tahoe Vista
Friday morning kayaking and thankfully not falling in the ice-cold lake
Good lunch at Fire Sign Cafe
Lazing around the room instead of going out on a hike
Driving to Incline Village and playing slots at the Hyatt casino
Tasty dinner at Fredrick's in Incline Village (omfg lobster/filet mignon/mascarpone/cucumber sushi deep fried = awesome)
Playing more slots and a hilarious video blackjack table with a big-boobed fake video dealer at the Biltmore on the border (me: up $5 on slots, him: won $30 at video blackjack table)
Waking up and going on a hike to a lake that is near Lake Tahoe
Getting kind of soaked on the hike to the lake that is near Lake Tahoe
Passable lunch at what used to be a Pizza Hut when I came to SLT as a kid, but is now "Bear Beach Cafe"
Getting absolutely pounded by hail on the way down 50
Spending wads of money outlet shopping in Folsom
Finding a Merlino's orange freeze booth in the outlets and getting some despite already being completely hopped up on sugar (can't pass that stuff up)
Driving our ass the rest of the way home

Alex also got me a birding manual and a pair of binoculars for our anniversary since I always point out cool birds when we're out and about but rarely have any idea what kind of birds they are. Using the manual, I was able to determine that the ducks chasing each other around by the water were mergansers. Also, a lot of bird names are weird. The binoculars are cool too, and I'll have to learn how to use them to focus on non-stationary things like, say, birds.

I am super zonked. I will deal with the pictures tomorrow. zzz

11:20 am - ha
Today is our one year anniversary! To celebrate, we officially changed our Facebook statuses. (We are also going to Tahoe next week, but this is clearly more important for folks who are in a stealth relationship, except that most folks at work know now so this will mostly tell us who hasn't been paying attention. Also, it's nice because I haven't had the opportunity to change my relationship status once the whole time I've been on Facebook. And it's also nice because, you know, I like him. That's good too.)

Anyway, here is the hilarious sequence of events you get when changing your relationship status on Facebook.

First, you are alerted that someone is requesting a relationship with you!

Then, you are informed that someone wants you to add him as your boyfriend!

But once you do that, you are reminded that no one else wants you:

Ah, technology. A boon it is indeed.

02:26 pm - they do good work
I am being very amused by the collected works of the Icon Group International, which I believe I somewhat circuitously found on Amazon via a link to "canned meat". I tell you, this whole "consumer product" market research gig is for the birds. Why, I could be producing such hits as:

The World Market for Frogs' Legs: A 2009 Global Trade Perspective
The 2000-2005 Outlook for Travel Kettles in Africa
The 2006-2011 World Outlook for Canned Meat-Based Cat Food
The 2009-2014 Outlook for Boiled Ham, Barbecue Pork, and Other Cooked Pork Made in Slaughtering Plants Excluding Canned Meats and Sausage in the United States
The 2009-2014 Outlook for Staplers in the United States
The 2007-2012 Outlook for Canned Spaghetti with or without Meat and Ravioli in Japan
The 2007 Report on Canned Meats Containing at Least 20-Percent Meat Made from Purchased Carcasses Excluding Food for Dogs, Cats, and Babies: World Market Segmentation by City (Paperback)

As a bonus, if you're hunting for a gift for that special someone, you can always get them this DVD. It really comes from the heart.

10:22 am - kittyversary!
I have had the kitties for one year today. And they are luckily still awful cute!

Kif has made great strides -- still isn't thrilled with people walking toward him, but if you sit on the couch he will attach himself to your lap. Maggie is still a little shy, but she has been slowly letting me approach and pet her when she's curled up on the bed or on a chair. And she is a bigtime cuddlebug once you safely lie down in the bed.

So cute puds yay.

Hey neat, I was at this concert. Will have to pick up the album sometime.

(That's the one where I posted to CL inquiring if there would be any straight, single men at the concert, and one responded, but there wasn't a Spark. Ha.)

02:18 pm - fun with dr. jellyfingers
Got up early today to go to the doctor for a checkup, routine bloodwork for cholesterol and iron levels, and general female maintenance, whereupon they told me they now only recommend female maintenance every three years, but they'd do mine anyway as long as I was there. Well, bully for that.

I have a weird numb spot on my right thigh which the doc says is meralgia paresthetica, and now I'm just glad it's just numb and not burning with pain. Thanks, Dr. Google! (I think it's from sleeping on my right side a lot. Fun.)

The most annoying part was I scheduled the appointment for 8:30 figuring it would run late and I'd get to work on time, but they were on time and I got to work all tired and 40 minutes early. What's up with that? I guess that means I can sneak out of here at a reasonable hour, then.

Monday. I got nothin'.

07:27 pm - i demand satisfaction
Shockingly, they actually had my size of hard drive in stock at the Valley Fair Apple store today, and I am now watching the damn thing reinstall from Time Machine backup, so 24 hour turnaround of fail is I suppose as good as can be expected, but still damned annoying. At least it gave me a chance to cut out of work early and go shopping before picking up the machine (I felt that given that my mom was in town this weekend I deserved ME TIME).

Ended up mostly just roaming around, but did find a pair of seriously ugly but seriously comfortable sandals that should come in handy for Comic-Con in July (they better work, consarnit). Also picked up a couple of shirts at Eddie Bauer, because that is just how stylin' I am. Oh yes.

Anyway, watching progress bars is fun. Perhaps I shall nuke some leftovers while I wait. Oh Monday, why must you be JUST SO EXCITING?

10:30 am - grrrrrrrrrr
Macbook go boom for the third time in two years. I handle that fucking thing with kid gloves, I tell you, and yet it insists on dying on me. Bastard.

Bonus awesome: Genius bar lady suggests it is because the plastic case under the hard drive is thin and does not offer much hard drive protection. Why, that is just lovely! It is not as if the case of a laptop should protect the insides of a laptop or anything.

My AppleCare on this thing expires in December and I think that is when I will get a new machine, but obviously I resent getting a new machine, and also resent the joys of having to restore the computer for the third time from backup, which is a bitch and a half (though this time hopefully Time Machine will make that a lot easier).

Still: lamesauce. Feh.

09:22 pm - yay vegas
I hath posted a bunch of Vegas pictures to Facebook -- feel free to stalk them there. However, I suppose I will not post the following picture to Facebook where sundry coworkers just might get the wrong idea. So we were at the Erotic Heritage Museum and just inside the entrance is this:

OMG NSFW )

I ended the trip up $20 thanks to the Survivor slot machines -- a nice balance of bright flashing lights, pretty colors, and me actually winning money on them (thanks, Rudy). Way more fun than the Star Trek slot machines.

We had a fun time, and Alex enjoyed himself even though he had never met any of these weirdos before, so, yay! A successful sojourn.

08:14 pm - food fail
Hostess Apple Bars, which I found in the Hostess/Wonder Bread thrift shop in Fremont this weekend, look like the late, lamented Apple Newton. (No, not that one, the cookie.)

However, they have that odd crunchy/crispy texture you get in the filling of Fig Newtons from fig seeds. This is because these apparently contain figs.

Disappointing.

Arnott's Mint Slice cookies, however, are worthy of being devoured in large amounts. Those're evil.

06:27 pm - a productive day
I was gonna drop off my old printer at the Sunnyvale recycling center, but my plans were foiled because apparently it is an Extra Dump Weekend and the cars were backed up for a couple of blocks. Luckily I was able to dump it off at Weird Stuff instead just down the block.

Then I went to Walgreens and Pet Club and Pet Food Express and Grocery Outlet and the Container Store and Ranch 99. I found this really cool kind of pasta at Grocery Outlet, "galletti," which look like elbow pasta with mohawks (literally "cocks' combs," huh huh huh ). They're De Cecco, too, and they were a buck, so I bought four pounds. Also bought a couple bags of "pasta mista," which looks like the leftovers from six different kinds of pasta all swept into one bag. I think those'll be good in soup.

And if it turns out I like either variety it'll guarantee that I never see either of them again. Woo!

Next weekend we're in Vegas, so this weekend I have to get all sorts of things done, such as watch TV and sit on my ass. Woo!

11:48 am - woohoo pics
An assortment of utter randomness from vacation! Apparently I take really random pics and totally fail to photograph various locations along the way. But that is what it is all about.

It's all pretty outside and stuff.

more snaps )

I took a bunch more shots at the zoo, but you've seen one giraffe, you've seen 'em all, right?

Anyway, good trip, and now I'm really tired, and glad I took today off as well. Cats remembered at about 5:15 AM that they like me, and they've been cuddling me all morning. Short attention span kitties to the rescue!

March 29th, 2009

11:33 pm - in a nutshell
So we did this:

Sunnyvale
Gilroy - shopping (briefly)
Paso Robles - lunch
Cambria - 2 nights, food, shopping, elephant seals, general laziness
Harmony - pottery shop
Cayucos - stop just to take a look around
Morro Bay - fudge'n'taffy'n'cinnamon buns (this town is dangerous)
SLO - fries, Italian ice, Bubble Gum Alley (gross), comic book shop
Pismo Beach - clam chowder in a toasted bread bowl (hells yes)
Santa Maria - driving through a rather boring town looking for a no longer in business comic book shop
Santa Barbara - 2 nights, zoo, bikes, roaming up and down State Street, somewhat disappointing food, more shopping, UCSB
Solvang - shopping, eyebrow raising at various kitsch, Danish bakery munchies
Pismo Beach - outlet shopping
SLO - really good tri-tip sandwich for dinner at what turned out to be past 7 PM with the rest of the drive ahead of us

We had this idea that we'd hit Gilroy for reals on the way back but obviously that failed and we decided to hit the (much smaller) Pismo outlets while they were still open -- we didn't get there till 6 and they close at 7, if that gives you an idea of how lazy we were about today. Effing tired, but it was rillyfun. Will upload pics later.

The weather was gorgeous the whole time, especially in SB, which is just gratuitously pretty, but probably too much of a college town for me overall (ha).

Also, I think the cats have regressed. They are being especially spazzy and not letting me pet them. IsOK, I'm pretty sure they will start cuddling me as soon as I go to sleep. Which I should do...now.

11:08 pm - I like vacation because it's vacationy
It is verra nice to get the hell out of town. Too bad I had to cram a week's worth of work into two days in order to get the hell out of town today. But fuck that, that was yesterday and today there is vacation!

Not up to much today other than driving down to Cambria, stopping for lunch and candy in Paso Robles, of course. We took 46 over to 1 and stopped at a pretty turnout to look at the view:

Local wildlife )

Had dinner at Robin's but I was still full from 3 PM lunch so I didn't get to order the salmon bisque. Woe. It's OK, we had this really tasty crab bisque in Paso Robles at lunch so that hit the cream soup spot (for now -- we have this clam chowder place in Pismo Beach bookmarked for Friday...).

Tomorrow, more food, some shopping, some slacking, some beaching, maybe go look at the elephant seals? Who cares, as long as there's no working. Woo!

08:34 pm - le dinner
Pasta + mushrooms + garlic + a couple slices of ham + a little tub of garlic-chive goat cheese that was about to expire = actually pretty tasty dinner. Hooray for laziness!

Should've sauteed the garlic a little longer, though. Isok, I just won't breathe on anyone.

11:15 pm - omg so fascinating
Some days over here are especially exciting, and they are the ones in which I put away laundry, gather up the trash, and clean out the medicine cabinet of expired vitamins and other pills.

Also drained and threw out nine extra bags of fluids that no one from the kitty kidney health group ever took off my hands and had been sitting under my spare sink since last March (and expired in November). Poor kitty, it's been nearly a year now. I have of course informed the New Cats that they are under no circumstances allowed to get sick ever. (They are not quite 2 years old and they are crazy cute little puds, and at the moment, they really want to be fed.)

And so, to bed -- stupid time change not used to it yet feh...

09:09 pm - omfg weekend
This week has massively sucked balls because of a project at work that has been massively sucking balls and will continue to do so for quite some time. Such fun! I am very glad it is the weekend. Also I wish I had been sensible and booked a vacation for March like I always say I will and then fail to do. Oops.

We have actually been busy the last couple of weekends -- Big Head Todd concert at the Fillmore weekend before last, and Wondercon last weekend, at which we utterly failed to run into various current coworkers who said they were there on Saturday too (but did run into a couple of ex-coworkers). Thankfully this weekend is going to be low-key. I think I'll make some celery soup and salmon and maybe bake something tomorrow.

Things are boring around here when they're going well, ain't they?

03:35 pm - evil
See's Bridge Mix = good. Got a box of it yesterday, can't stop eating it now. Like, things called "bridge mix" are usually gross, but this stuff has chocolate-covered raisins, almonds, pecans, caramels, brown sugar thingies, small pieces of molasses chips, allegedly some almond toffees though I haven't found one yet, and I just discovered some of the little dark chocolate covered cubes have coconut in them and they are DAMN GOOD.

Only thing I could do without is the pecans. I'm meh on pecans.

Only problem is you end up eating many, many pieces while searching for the elusive almond toffee. Curses!

10:55 am - omg teh hallmark holiday
V-Day was fun! It was, as expected, fuckin' raining for most of the day, and I had thought we would leave the house around 10, do the hike, and then grab lunch, but the world was just all wet and gross and the bed was all nice and warm (shut it, pervs) so we didn't make it outside till around 2, which was fine by me because I am highly pro cuddling in warm beds on holidays (shut it, pervs).

Anyway, once we rousted ourselves out of bed, we drove to Little Lucca to grab absolutely ridiculously sized sandwiches for lunch. Then once we finished eating (only about half of) the enormous sandwiches, there was a break in the rain and the sun was out, so we decided to risk going for the hike up Sweeney Ridge. We had fantastic luck in that it only rained for maybe ten minutes the entire 2.5 hours we were up there, and in between that there were absolutely gorgeous clear views of the entire Bay Area and, once you get to the top, the ocean and Pacifica as well. Unfortunately, my camera ran out of batteries about 5 pictures in because I am an idiot and forgot to charge it.

The old Nike missile site on top is pretty neat, too, if you like old decaying buildings -- too bad the buildings are prime tagging territory. (In one of them you could still smell the spraypaint.) But overall, still pretty interesting.

Note: "Easy" hikes are easy if you're in shape. My legs hurt. Was cool, though. This one is all paved but nearly all straight uphill -- well, at least that means it's an easier descent, even though that part gives you shin splints. Anyway, I recommend this one for photography and general looking-around, and I hear the wildflowers are gorgeous around March.

After hiking it was back to my hut to laze around more, and then I made dinner -- salmon en papillote, with aligot, which was tasty and rich as hell, if possibly inauthentic, since the Cooks Illustrated recipe suggests gruyere and mozzarella in place of hard-to-find tomme cheese, but who cares, it was damn good. Then for dessert there was the French Silk pie (via a new Cooks' Country recipe), which was fantastic. Score three for new recipes!

After stuffing ourselves, we caravaned over to his place to look after his cats, and spent yesterday lazing around at his place. So, a good weekend.

In re: mans, I found out last week that (duh) various people at work think they Know we have been dating, but are just not being nosy about it to my face like I thought they would be. Maybe the time of seekrecy is over. I've been getting way tired of secrecy lately, so, good. 08:18 pm - omgfud
I have cooked dinner for the second weeknight in a row. Like, OMG. Well, today was easier because I stayed home from work after getting a bunch of cavities taken care of (5 of them in three separate areas, sheesh) and the numbing drugs didn't wear off till 3:30, which meant I didn't eat lunch till 3:30.

Anyway, I clearly didn't eat enough lunch so I went to the store and picked up stuff to make Greek-ish tomato risotto, which actually turned out quite well.

Notes:
* No, you don't need 3/4 freakin' cup of olive oil -- can achieve plenty of nutty aroma with a tablespoon.
* Yes, you can laze out and use canned tomato juice. Sure, it might be better with fresh, but canned = lazy = faster.
* Added golden raisins with some skepticism but those turned out to be the best part and clearly I should have added more -- I need to play with that as an ingredient in savory dishes more often.
* Instead of including pine nuts in the simmering mixture, topped the finished rice with toasted pine nuts. Good stuff.

Also made lamb/beef burgers with garlic, onion, rosemary, and marjoram -- decent, needed more salt though. Good with cucumber/feta dip.

FOOD GOOD! Tomorrow I'll make up for this by going to Taco Bell or something.

08:18 pm - mmmfud
Have been trying to find more things I can cook quickly on weeknights, particularly on weeknights directly after I spent the whole weekend assing around and thus lack leftovers.

Tried this one tonight (have had it bookmarked for awhile): Fettucine with Mushrooms, Tarragon and Goat Cheese Sauce

Thoughts:

* cooks fast -- you can easily slice and saute the mushrooms in the time it takes to boil the pasta
* pretty tasty -- but I would add some garlic and thyme while sauteeing the mushrooms, and maybe a dash of lemon juice at the end
* cat wants some -- and now has his head in the bowl I used to toss the pasta with the sauce

I'd make it again with those slight changes. Isgood.

03:15 pm - social experimentation
There's this podium-type thing sitting outside my cube which used to be a repository of other people's office detritus. After Christmas I cleaned it off and put a bunch of candy on it -- all the crap I collected over Christmas on clearance plus stuff we got from vendors. Good stuff, too -- chocolate-covered Oreos, Hershey kisses, Reese's cups, chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, Cadbury Christmas chocolate not-Mini-Eggs, Ghirardelli peppermint bark, etc.

Over the last two weeks, all the good candy has gone away, and I've been quietly replacing it with slightly less ideal candy I have accumulated recently: Bacon Mints, gumballs that look like meatballs but say "bubblegum flavored" in tiny font, Trader Joe's knockoff lifesavers that taste like cough syrup, bacon-flavored jelly beans, these revolting chocolate-filled hard candies a vendor sent us that look like they should be peppermint but are actually strawberry/mint (they are TRULY AWFUL), and, my favorite, Zit Poppers candy.

It is kind of funny watching people come up to the formerly-reliable candy station and look puzzled at the weird shit that's there now. Heh.

11:00 am - color me unamused
So I've been gingerly chewing on half of a temp crown for over a week because half of it cracked off while I was eating a pupusa (wtf). Today I was supposed to get the Real Shiny Permanent Gold Crown put in. Got there, got it shoved in, checked the bite, oops, there's a high spot. Cut to 45 minutes of trying to fix the bite and buff down the high spot until finally they filed down so much of the high spot that they put a hole in the crown, which now has to be remade.

What sucks more is after the hole appeared in the crown they decided to make me a new temp crown, but someone lost the original temp impression, so they had to make a new one on the spot from a new impression...which then didn't fit either. Buff, remove, file, try again, fail.

So what do I have in my face now? The same half of a temp crown I've been gingerly chewing on for over a week. Grrrrrr.

Apparently this tooth is so small and so shallow there wasn't much to work with in the first place (crown material way thin), so the solution might be to file down the tooth it's hitting on the bottom (yeesh). They're going to try to put a rush on remaking the crown, but it might take another week or two.

So much for getting into that bag o' Jelly Bellies I'd been saving for tonight...

Hoo boy, I don't want to get back into the work thing right now. Ugh. I left a bunch of stuff on the "get this done in January" pile (with good reasons, not all slack) but now it all actually has to get done. Not cool.

I think tonight I need to take down the Christmas lamp and clean up the house a bit. Perhaps even do some laundry. Woo! Routine!

Hmm, I guess that's it for this year. And so, to bed.

02:59 pm - ouchy ouch
Two days post-root canal and I can almost chew on that side of my face again. Screw all this soft food, I want chips.

Yesterday I made a bunch of cookies, and today I made a bunch of cookies. I'm thinking tomorrow I might make a bunch of cookies, and then I'll be done. Woo!

05:32 pm - whee, December
I have a feeling that this may be the slowest week everrrrrrr. The office is doing a holiday shutdown next week and the week after, so a couple of things got put off till after we get back, so either I've got nothing to do for a few days or something's going to explode shortly. Hm.

In the meantime I would like to do my traditional excessive holiday cookie baking, but I lack freezer space. Maybe I will attempt to reorganize.

Why yes, I have been avoiding the dentist for an embarrassingly long time. Actually, if pressed, I probably have not been to a dentist since 1999. Oops. Only took me three months of saying really truly yeah I'm gonna go do that soon to actually go do that today. It helped that I've got a tooth in there that has started bothering me lately, so off to take my licks I went.

Dentist was actually very good about not being a bitch about it, though I was laying it on rather thick, so I guess she passes. The tooth that has been bothering me actually had a nice big hole in it, so that one gets a root canal next week. Even better, when the hygienist was scraping the crud off my teeth she knocked a piece of it loose (sigh).

(Also, when the heck did they make that pointy tartar scraping thing motorized? Ow.)

Oddly, the tooth with the big hole in it doesn't hurt right now. I will just avoid drinking iced anything. Or hot anything. Or eating anything. Hrm.

Once I get the root canal taken care of (8 AM next Thursday, hot diggity) I have 5 fillings to do and I need to get my wisdom teeth out. Hooray for the dentist! I can't imagine why I put it off this long!

BTW, hope all y'all who are at Yahoo or know someone at Yahoo are doing OK after today's much protracted layoffs. Go severance go.

10:39 am - note to self
Even if 40 people RSVP to a party, at least 10 of them will have some misfortune befall them -- sickness or family crisis or house exploding -- and a further 5-10 will leave before dinner, so for God's sake do not make 3 lb of spaghetti.

(Next year I'm making lasagna, durn it. Preassembled so I don't have to futz with it at the last minute. No protein for anyone!)

Also, have discovered two hot dips that are rillytasty. Mushroom cheese substance and goat cheese fondue substance = good. Perfect for the double-sided dip crockpot. I ran out of bread again even though I bought two baguettes this year. Luckily, I had no shortage of crackers...

Hooray for fud!
